Aberdeen’s Union Terrace Gardens has been awarded the Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award by the The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS). It's the first time a public realm project has scooped the prize.

The £28.3m regeneration project which opened in 2022 transformed the 19th century gardens in the city centre with new landscaping, engineering works and the construction of three lantern like pavilions. Ryden was involved in this scheme on behalf of Aberdeen City Council by submitting detailed planning consents and providing project management for the extensive programme of works.

Designed by Stallan-Brand and LDA Design, Union Terrace Gardens has re-emerged as one of Aberdeen’s most loved public spaces. Located close to Aberdeen Art Gallery, His Majesty’s Theatre and the Central Library, the gardens now offer an accessible, safe and welcoming environment that strengthens the cultural spine of the city.

Architect Mary Duggan, who chaired the RIAS Doolan Award jury, commented:

"Union Terrace Gardens draws people in without intimidation: an open invitation that promotes a sense of community through a genuine public offering, and delivering precisely the opposite of what the space had become through years of neglect.

“Beyond its architectural and horticultural precision, the project is a demonstration of civic governance, endurance and responsibility. This ten-year investment by Aberdeen City Council embodies a form of public trust and collective patience that is rarely seen in contemporary procurement, while also delivering an exemplar quality, with a deeper attitude towards sustainability and democracy.”

Ryden continues to support public sector bodies and developers across Scotland in delivering impactful regeneration schemes, major public realm investments and complex planning submissions.
