Adrian Smith

Adrian is a Chartered Town Planner with over 35 years' experience as a planning and development advisor throughout Scotland in both the public and private sectors. He was a founding partner of niche planning consultancy Muir Smith Evans and joined Ryden in December 2017 when the two firms merged.

Prior to founding Muir Smith Evans in 2004 Adrian was a planning director for Turley where he spent 14 years building up the Scottish business unit and serving on the company board. His previous public sector experience includes periods working for Glasgow City Council, Monklands District Council and the former Irvine Development Corporation on development planning, development management and project implementation.

Adrian has extensive experience of managing large multi-disciplinary teams and applying strategic thinking on complex, often sensitive, commercial development projects. He has an established reputation for providing sound, commercially-aware planning advice and for enhancing the value of his clients' assets by delivering beneficial planning permissions.

Adrian is an experienced communicator with a reputation for being clear and concise. He is skilled in the presentation of proposals at public meetings, pre-application consultations and hearings. He has also acted as the planning witness at numerous public inquiries.

Retail and Leisure Provides specialist retail planning advice on a wide range of shopping and leisure developments including supermarkets (for Asda, Tesco, J Sainsbury and various developers), hotels (including Premier Inn), restaurants and cinemas. Shopping centre work has included negotiation of planning permission for Union Square, Aberdeen (for Hammerson), the extension/re-configuration of the St Enoch Centre, Glasgow (for Sears and Mills Corporation) and Silverburn Phase 3, Glasgow (for Hammerson).

Strategic Housing Land Planning consultant to various housebuilders and developers securing the release of greenfield sites for development through development plan engagement and planning permissions. Clients include Stewart Milne Group, Mactaggart & Mickel, Taylor Wimpey and Paradigm Asset Managment Group (for Deuchny Properties).

Regeneration Planning advisor to Ravenscraig Ltd, securing the original 20-year planning permission, and subsequent related permissions, for this nationally important project. Also advises Clyde Gateway on the Shawfield National Business Districts proposals, delivering planning permission for a masterplan framework and for essential remediation and Infrastructure works. At Buchanan Business Park, Stepps planning permissions have been delivered for various alternative uses including a retail store, health club and housing.

Outdoor Media Planning advisor in relation to numerous media screen installations for leaders in the sector including Forrest Group, Ocean Outdoor and Wildstone.
