John is the Partner responsible for the establishment of Planning Consultancy services in the North East of Scotland.  He was previously a Partner in the Architectural and Town Planning Consultancy of Jenkins & Marr and has extensive experience of planning in both the private and public sectors.

Since joining Ryden he has consolidated and expanded his client base to make Ryden the foremost planning consultancy in the North East of Scotland and one of the largest in Scotland.  He is now Head of Consulting at Ryden with responsibility for planning and consultancy services in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. 

He has secured planning permissions for major business and residential developments through both planning applications and public inquiries and has significant experience as an expert witness.

John is a member of a number of public/private sector liaison groups including the award-winning Trinity Group in Aberdeen.


Retained planning adviser for NHS Grampian and the University of Aberdeen. Involved in the allocation of surplus land for 2,000 houses and 35 hectares of employment use at Bucksburn for the University

Represented all the major house builders and Homes for Scotland at previous Local Plan Inquiries in Aberdeen City and Shire. Major housing land releases at Kingswells, Newmachar and Newburgh for Stewart Milne Homes; and, the allocation of land for Class 4 Business Use at Westhill for Westhill Development Company Ltd.

Projects encompass the preparation of Development Frameworks and Masterplans and involve managing multi-disciplinary teams and extensive public engagement. They also include the submission and ongoing negotiation of planning applications for residential, business and mixed use developments throughout Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Angus and Highland.
