Work begins on Queen Street Travelodge in Edinburgh

12th July 2011

Development has started to bring another Travelodge to Edinburgh.  Scaffolding has gone up at 30-31 Queen Street, just as the news emerged that the group is to open a 13th hotel in Princes Street in the Capital next year.

Property owners Standard Life are working with development managers Joint Properties to deliver the 85-bed hotel in Queen Street by Spring 2012.

Work on the £2m fit-out started in May.  The interior is currently being stripped out at the property, a vacant 22.755 sq ft office which sits behind a traditional townhouse façade.

Property consultant Ryden structured Travelodge’s lease and is project managing the fit-out.   Rob Davis, associate at the firm, said “There have been several office properties converted to hotels within Edinburgh recently because offices tend to lend themselves well to being transformed relatively easily due to their open floorplates.”

Planning permission and Listed Building Consent were granted 10 September 2010 to change the property to a hotel.

Travelodge now has 40 hotels across Scotland and aims to bring the tally North of the Border to 62 in the next few years.  The two new hotels in the Capital will create around 40 new jobs and bring Travelodge’s total offering in Edinburgh to 1230 rooms.
