Consumer expenditure is faltering as high price inflation and low wage growth are compounded by weak employment growth and an overhang of personal debt. Like-for-like retail sales in Scotland fell by 2.1% in the 12 months to November 2011*. Food sales improved marginally, but non-food sales fell across clothing & footwear, homewares and furniture. Enterprise Areas welcome but many will need extra financial support, warns Ryden

Commenting on Finance Secretary John Swinney’s announcement on Scotland’s Enterprise Areas. Dr Mark Robertson of Ryden, said: “Ryden welcomes the Scottish Government's confirmation of the four Enterprise Areas. Today’s (18 Jan) rise in Scottish unemployment highlights the need for initiatives such as EAs to bring jobs to locations across the country and generally make Scotland more attractive to high growth firms and for inward investment. 2011 Leeds city centre office take-up is 40% increase on previous year

According to data compiled by the Leeds Agents’ Forum the total take-up of office space in Leeds city centre in quarter four (Q4 2011) reached 87,050 sq ft. This, combined with the previous three quarters, produced a year end total of 398,159 sq ft transacted across 106 deals. Read further analysis of office take-up in Leeds.
