ECA sells Portsburgh Church and adjacent former Salvation Army Hostel
18th April 2007
Ryden, acting on behalf of Edinburgh College of Art, is pleased to announce the sale of Portsburgh Church and the adjacent former Salvation Army Hostel at No. 2 West Port, Grassmarket, Edinburgh to a private developer for a price in the region of £2 million. The buildings were put on the market when they became surplus to the requirements of Edinburgh College of Art following their acquisition of Evolution House.
Both buildings are Category B listed and overlook the Grassmarket. Portsburgh Church, which was built in 1828, has been refurbished to a shell condition and provides 648m² (6,975 sq ft) of accommodation. The former Salvation Army Hostel is a four-storey stone-built building, which has been converted to 582m² (6,265 sq ft) of office and studio accommodation. The total accommodation of both buildings is 1,230m² (13,240 sq ft).
It is understood that the private developer is considering developing a small boutique hotel with adjacent restaurant.
