UNITE Buys Last ERI Site

14th February 2007

NHS Lothian has approved the sale of the 0.85 acre (0.34 hectare) site at 22-38 Chalmers Street, Edinburgh to The UNITE Group plc (UNITE) for a price understood to be in excess of £8m.  The sale is subject to UNITE obtaining planning consent, and pre-application consultations have already commenced. UNITE proposes to regenerate the existing brownfield site by developing professionally managed, purpose built, quality student accommodation.  The site is the last remaining section of the former Royal Infirmary and is currently being operated as a car park.  The site was marketed by Ryden on behalf of NHS Lothian and attracted considerable interest with 26 offers being received at the closing date. Jim Pike, Acquisition & Development Director with UNITE, comments: “We are delighted to have secured this high profile site, which is ideally located for us to deliver another high quality development. We will continue to grow our presence in Edinburgh, not only offering more choice for students, but also bringing wider benefits, such as regeneration and investment to the broader community”.UNITE was advised by DTZ.
