An Inspirational Focus for Dundee's Cultural Quarter

1st November

Ambitious plans are afoot that will complement the ongoing urban renewal of Dundee’s burgeoning Westport area.Argyll House Ltd owns the 3 sites that form the triangular block North East of the city’s Westport roundabout. The company has now lodged a planning application for the £15million first phase of a bold development project.“After a period of close consultation with our client and Dundee City Council we are delighted to have taken the first step in the proposed redevelopment of this landmark site,” said Billy Taylor of Ryden, the firm advising on and managing the renewal project.  He added: “There is broad consensus amongst all parties involved that the long-term development of the complete Argyll House site will be best served by a phased and progressive approach to its implementation.”The entire 0.3 hectares site occupies the prominent position opposite the proposed Overgate Centre extension and lies directly adjacent to the planned new Dundee City Council offices.Phase 1 of this comprehensive 3-phase brownfield redevelopment initiative involves the former Centre Car Company site opposite the existing Lidl store at the corner of West Marketgait and South Ward road. The application site measures some 0.1 hectares and proposes a mixed use development comprising retail and office accommodation and ancillary car parking.A spokesman for Argyll House Ltd said: “Significant investment in the immediate area surrounding the application site is resulting in major regeneration of this part of Dundee City centre.  As a first phase renewal project the site’s prominence presents a unique opportunity to be the catalyst for a contemporary and inspiring development in the heart of Dundee’s cultural quarter.” The Company’s outline plans for Phase 2 aim to contribute to the upgrading of existing stock of city centre leisure and hotel accommodation.  Finally, Phase 3 envisages a landmark building as the key focal point for the cultural quarter designated in the Dundee City Local Plan.
